To spank or not to spank?

I was spanked as a child, and never feared my mother for it. I was beaten as a young and older teenager and both feared and hated my step-father. So my views will be found a bit odd I suspect.

When a child who is either beyond the age of reason or past it at the time is out of control a light swat on their backside can be a useful tool to get their attention. Anything outside of that is completely unwarranted in my opinion.
