Soap operas in Syria
There's only to countries betwen syria and saudi arabia
We're maybe close geographically but the cultural (and religious, to some extent) differences are way too vast.
but your post reminded me of something I wanted to tackle earlier. Fundamentalists grip on the Saudi government and public is growing weaker by day. In places like Jeddah you never hear any wacko religious police stories like in Riyadh and Al-Qassim, they're actually getting thrown out of public places and have absolutely no authority here.
The religious police are in fact the ones getting on their on way without even realizing, the Saudi society is in fact moving forward and they can't comprehend that fact and are still believing that people look at them as the saviours like they used to, while the exact opposite is what's actually going on.
They arrest people just for talking to the opposite sex, they'll beat you up and hold you in prison for a whole day if they find you in the streets on prayer time. They're basically forcing "Allah commands" on people using power, forgetting (or ignoring) that Quran says there's no compulsion in religion, and people are getting sick of it.
Looking back at American and European history I find a lot of similarities, history will repeat itself and religion will eventually go back to its place: the mosque.
Unfortunately, there's no progression on issues like homosexuality and atheism and I think there won't be for a while, after all you guys are still struggling with those issues so it's only logical that the Saudis are lightyears behind their peers and will be for a long, long time.
Is it obvious that I have too much free time?
Meh There's progression, for example my country has opened doors to gay marriage, altrough america is having problems with trying to impose conservative laws that are unconstituionual so they are not legal anyway, but it's mostly centered around Bible belt of USA
