It's okay to clean the item with water given that your item doesn't contain electronic components. Though, it's possible sometimes to pour water on (some) electronics without causing damages to them. If your CPU or machine heats regularly this could be due:
1) Operating the machine under a hot environment
2) In PC's you might consider adding a cooling paste on the CPU
3) Fans not working properly
4) Excessive computations conducted by certain programs
5) Lack of air circulation (keep your machine in open area where air can get in and out and avoid blocking the areas where air comes out of your machine)
