Wonderful. Now I know you already said that you realized you may be assuming to much about why others would own something like a dream catcher. I still think you are looking at the reasons in too much of a black and white way. "Because it looks cool" is a beauty assessment, which is an aspect of art. As an artist myself, I see art as something to be shared both within and between cultures. Imitation is also the greatest form of flattery, and that works as long as credit is given to the source of the inspiration. Unless I am ripping off art and calling it my own, why would this ever be a problem? As others have said, nobody is burning or disgracing these cultural pieces in any of these cases.
But that's just the thing it's not just art . To some non native it may just be art . For my self and my people objects have a deeper meaning a deeper context steeped in history and culture .( like the grave marker i made for my mother when she was taken from us. was it beautiful yes did i make it just to be pretty no ) And robbing it of that or copying it without it in mind . May not burn it but it takes something away from it. Something profound .
Seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy -- myself.
