Yet it seems all theists, through out time, till now, understand this. Even polytheists and ancient societies understood this. Too much technology blinding us to the signs in ourselves maybe?
Yes, theists throughout time have all understood their delusions. Too bad there were so many competing delusions. If the fantasy had been the same for all theists, that might have served as evidence that a deity was behind the fantasy. But, of course, there have been thousands of those fantasies, and groups happily killing each other over their imaginary friends.
Then we finally witness the growth of science and technology, and gain the ability to measure actual events. We gained an appreciation for logic, reason, and good solid research. And to the horrified terror of con-artist witch doctor lying scum religitards everywhere, people started asking for something they could NOT supply: PROOF.
