I once heard the term "SPAG" (self-projection as god). In other words, a believer becomes so entangled in his belief that any attack on his deity is perceived as an attack on him personally.
This is both baffling and amusing, as one would think that an actual god would be quite capable of defending its own honour without help from a mortal. Defend itself in realtime, that is -- not in some fictional court of judgement to be convened after the death of the offending mortal.
I do think god is just a more (so they think) 'perfect' version of the believers own mind. There might be as many gods as believers, living or that are now dead.
Religions are just political stances the perfect self agrees with.
