Eyelids are overrated. They let light in, so if you have bright light your eyes will still capture some strong light if itr is around.
An experiment, look (briefly, < 1 second) at the sun. go to a dark room and close your eyes.
Is that light that you see, or the retina cells overloaded?
I was stupid enough when young to spend a whole afternoon welding with electrical arch without a mask. For those that want to test this, be pre,pared for a night of pure pain.
