How can this be simply explained?
It's an ambiguous figure. There are many such out there. In this case, there are two possible perspectives: one where you are slightly below the figure and looking up; the other where you are slightly above the figure and looking down.
The mind tends to resolve one way or the other, but you can switch back and forth with some concentration.
