When in doubt, write what you know. It sounds like you're out to prove some point instead of tell a story that's personal to you. This usually makes for very contrived writing. Some of the world's greatest writers were/are very wild characters in real life. Living is what allows us to write well. More specifically, living through trials and tribulations.
