Was WWI more disastrous than the WTC attacks? No possible doubt of it. But whether an action might be considered 'demonic' (in the sense you used) really has nothing to do with the casualty numbers. The act of torturing, raping and murdering a single child would, by normal people, be seen as more 'demonic' than a landslide which kills a thousand people.
Numbers don't matter as much as you seem to think.
