I think it's easy to see how the brain can be completely fooled, just look at people seeing things while hypnotised, apparently with just a few words, they imagine they are different people, can be made to believe they are in the outback while sat in a studio chair.. the list goes on.
I've seen people say they all see the same thing while others don't, check out the link I gave you for the miracle of the sun, hundreds were convinced they saw the sun dance around the sky, others didn't see the same thing. Clearly also the sun dancing round the sky would have been seen by observatories and populations in the same hemisphere (none did)
When i was about 11 at school some of the kids were all claiming they saw a paper moving from desk to desk in the classroom window, i looked and saw nothing at the same time as they were claiming it was moving. It was such a serious incident that some pupils had to seek help afterwards (unheard of back then). So i have seen what you describe in action, or rather seen people believe they see things while stood next to them.
Of course the plate could have moved, but there are literally hundreds of explanations, small vibrations perhaps.. the list is endless, why jump to supernatural sources ?
