After a few months of working agency, I have decided it's not for me. At least not for me in this area. The availability of nearby facilities was minimal and I'm not driving an hour or more to work somewhere.
During the period I was bouncing from one facility to another, I happened upon the place where my father works. He's retiring soon. At first, I didn't want to talk to him and he respected that. Eventually, our running into one another became unavoidable. He has changed, somewhat. He no longer seems averse to the fact that I am gay. I asked him if he still drinks. Like a fish, was his response. He asked me to become a permanent staffer at the facility, but the more time I worked there the less I liked the place. Due to minimal facility availability, I found myself working there more and getting frustrated and burned out entirely too easily. So, I had to cancel future shifts at that place and I had to take a break from working.
Recently, I applied at a nearby facility. Had an interview, a follow-up where I filled out more paperwork, and this coming Wednesday I have a full day of orientation. Will be working the overnight shift three days a week. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays. They don't consider Sunday to be part of their weekend. The good thing is I'm getting paid nearly as much as I made doing agency, which means agency is soon going to have to step up its wages.
I'll still keep the agency app and remain an employee in case I feel like picking up an extra shift.
