After all, on modern processors, how deep is the pipeline? Ten, fifteen stages? What's the benefit with having two threads on the same core?? If one stalls, the other can continue? Is not 12 physical cores enough???
These processors only have 4 cores. Six threads/cores is considered the place to start these days. Since these are for a file server, the extra threads will likely be a benefit. Anyway, the Xeons without hyper threading are $10-15, and the ones with hyper threading are only $10 more. At that price it's a no-brainer.
Wow, didn't know that! My 24-year old son just bought a new rig from CyberPower PC that cost $5,300 with its Intel Core i9-12900KS costing around $750. I knew that some microcontrollers are going for $0.10, but a hyperthreaded processor for $20?!! Incredible! I am feeling SO old, remembering my first 128-baud modem from the early 80s.
