in addition to its combustability, hydrogen gas presents another mortal danger to the crew of a zeppelin airship, because hydrogen asphyxiates quickly and without warning symptoms other then loss of consciousness.
So when the crew of a zeppelin airships works in the upper part or the envelope where any escaped hydrogen may accumulate, they are required to whistle continuously. The reason for the mandate is the only warning they have that they’ve moved into a dangerous pocket of escaped hydrogen is the sound of their whistling will suddenly become sharp and shrill, for the same reason that breathing in helium causes the persons voice to become sharp and shrill
