The saying “laughing his head off” came from the last public beheading carried out in England in 1742. For the grand occasion temporary spectator stands were erected to enable the ghoulish public to get a better view. Unfortunately the shoddily built stand collapsed, killing 9 spectators, before the main event. When the accused approached the headman’s block, he was told of this tragedy. He began laughing, and was still laughing when the executioner’s axe fell.
