I would not rule out the 20% figure. Men are massively testosterone driven. Most men need to have regular sex. Reading through the thread, it seems a few are not truly considering all the facets of rape and rapists.
When we hear the word rape or rapist it immediately conjures up the stereotypical image of a violent, psychotic thug with a knife, hidden behind a bush or in a dark alleyway, ready to pounce on his unsuspecting victim. Yeah, it happens, but rarely. These are the sorts of horror stories that make the news but thankfully they are relatively rare. But when we talk about 20% of women being raped, we aren't just talking about women that have been attacked in the street by nut cases. The figure will include all forms of rape. What about marital/partner rape? I just think that this is all too common, more common than we think, and responsible for the vast majority of the un-reported cases, though some cases will be reported too, which make up that 20%. All you need really is two partners with different sex drives, one desperate for sex, the other not, and the desperate partner to have no self control. I can believe the 20% figure to be honest and would bet most women know some one who at some point in their lives have had an experience where maybe they had sex that they didn't really want to and the other person did.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

I personally know one victim of gang rape and, unfortunately, know of many who were victims of rape when they were children by the same man. Those are only the more abhorrent rapes that I am absolutely positive happened to people very close to me. It is too common. I really do not want to marginalize male rape, though. It happens more than it should too. This statistic should really include that and just pertain to all people. RE: Almost 20% of American women have been raped!

My wife knows some one that was raped by her brother, I agree it is more common than we think. She also knows some one who was raped in an old relationship by her partner, though this person refuses to label it as such. But the fact is he wanted it, she didn't, so it goes down as rape in my book. Unless she didn't say no. Plus it obviously affected this person enough to talk about it. The original point I was trying to convey is often rape happens between people who know each other rather than random violent attacks and this brings me back to the marital rape thing, another thing we don't often consider.

Due to our crazy patch-work quilt of ranges of legal age of consent I'd bet dollars to donuts the addition of consensual, non-violent statutory rape would blow that statistic out of proportion. I do not consider the above scenario to be on par with violent, &/or non-consensual rape & if both statistics are combined in the 20% from the study, I'd like to know the actual percentage of violent, non-consensual rape. That's all I was saying. p.s. if the 20% stands on it's own, then that's just fucking horrible America.

That's bullshit, but I believe it, Dolan says.
