Not neccesarily, no.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I would start by looking at the worlds most religion-free countries. As far as I can tell, countries like Sweden seem to be a lot more civilised and peaceful than more religious countries.

No way, without religion Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Finland will have an immense battle royale.

You have to take into account the environment here. If it all disappeared tomorrow, what would the 50 and some odd percent that are bonafide fundamentalists do? It's a state of mind. This country alone would be horrible, and in the end, they would probably just replace it with something else.
It was easy for me to let it go, but I know people who believe because they need to believe. I doubt they would fare well without their crutch. The process needs to be slow. It has to be, because we are overturning thousands of years of social indoctrination. Each generation believes a little less. That has to suffice. No matter how valiantly the champions of atheism like Dawkins and Harris pontificate, they'll never convert the majority. It just doesn't work that way. Small steps. We are at 30% now, so we have gained some ground globally. Unfortunately the world is always slow to change.
"In our youth, we lacked the maturity, the decency to create gods better than ourselves so that we might have something to aspire to. Instead we are left with a host of deities who were violent, narcissistic, vengeful bullies who reflected our own values. Our gods could have been anything we could imagine, and all we were capable of manifesting were gods who shared the worst of our natures."-Me
"Atheism leaves a man to sense, to philosophy, to natural piety, to laws, to reputation; all of which may be guides to an outward moral virtue, even if religion vanished; but religious superstition dismounts all these and erects an absolute monarchy in the minds of men." – Francis Bacon RE: Would the world neccesarily be a better place without God/religion?

God is local to the identity and ya ain't gonna have a world without faith. That said, "better" is relative; without religion we'd be moving forward.

If religion ceased overnight, in my opinion you would not notice the difference. As a species, humans would remain the same aggressive, greedy and stupid animals we have always been.
The poor would still be poor, the starving would still starve, the strong would still prey on the weak. But mostly, people would still simply get on with their lives as they always have. Of course, there would still be emotionally needy and weak people who just have to have somebody to tell them how to live. Such people might turn to say political personality cults,as found in totalitarian states and to a lesser degree in the US. |
