Hey everyone, I just found the forum here and after five minutes of looking around it already feels like home. I just recently (within the last year) shed the last vestige of any faith that was still clinging to me from the indoctrination of a Southern Baptist Evangelical school I was forced to attend back in the 80's. Yeah, back when Satan was around every corner and the Rapture was supposed to happen any day. Records said all sorts of evil things if you were brave enough to ruin the stylus on your turntable by playing them backwards and the Religious Right was just starting to infiltrate the body politic in full force.
My deconversion story is really kind of uneventful and it's the end result that matters the most so I won't bore you with it except to say that I am now a strict materialist and happy to be rid of the guilt, fear and anxiety that Christianity saddled me with. Such powerful memes. It's no wonder it took me all of these years to go from a Fundie to a Moderate to a Deist to a Pan Theist to a good old honest to dirt Atheist. The word still feels strange but I'm proud to say it and I'm looking forward to hanging out with like minded people here. People that can look around at the Universe and marvel at its beauty and complexity without feeling like they're living on a borrowed planet.
