Cardinal Brady "apologises" to abuse victim after BBC exposure
In 1975, the Catholic Church in Ireland conducted an internal investigation into sexual abuse allegations against its clergy. Brendan Boland, then a 14-year-old boy, gave evidence that he had suffered abuse at the hands of one Fr Brendan Smyth, as well as providing names and addresses of other children at risk by the priest, to the then-36-year-old Fr Sean Brady. Brady passed the allegations to his superiors but the parents and the police were never informed. Smyth carried on with molesting children, including Boland's sister, right up until 1988.

Last week a BBC documentary brought all of this shameful story to light. Today, Brady, now Cardinal and leader of the RCC in Ireland, said that he wants to apologise "personally" to Brendan Boland "at the earliest opportunity" - thirty-seven years after the event. However, he maintained that the documentary had "exaggerated" his part in the shameful episode. Apparently his role had been to take notes and inform people he trusted to take action. A back-handed apology at best, then.

Can you imagine the shit-storm that would ensue if, say, a teacher had done all this and it had been swept under the carpet with thousands of similar allegations, only coming to light decades later? There would be resignations and sackings left right and centre, and there probably wouldn't be a school with two bricks left standing.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I think this is the thing that will being it down, like Tax evasion for Al Capone.
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful" - Edward Gibbon (Offen misattributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Seneca the Younger) (Thanks to apophenia for the correction)
'I am driven by two main philosophies:
Know more about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you' - Neil deGrasse Tyson
"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." - Mark Twain

An update, of sorts:

Quote:Brendan Boland, one of the victims of paedophile priest Father Brendan Smyth, has said his healing and that of other victims cannot begin while Cardinal Sean Brady remains as Catholic Primate of all-Ireland.

That smells of revenge not anything honest. It doesn't matter wht job a person holds, healing can begin at any time, any place and it starts with forgiveness.

Maybe some priest should stick his dick up your ass so you can find out what these people went through at the hands of these servants of your fucking god.

Let him have his revenge then. Sean Brady stood by whilst Brendan Boland and many others were abused, but this is all fine if he asks for forgiveness? You people make me sick.

You are just like the people who attacked Joe Paterno. You subscribe more authority tto people than they actually have. You also forget that not all people have moral courage and that other factors play a role in their own actions.

Your judgementalism and condemnation, when you can do no better, makes me sick.

Read 1 John. Those who practice sin are NOT of God nor are His servants. Try to be a bit more sophisticated instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

"John" is as big a pile of bullshit as the rest of your fairy tales.

It carries no weight in the real world. He's a fucking bishop and he maintains that he follows your fucking god. Your problem is with him...or his is with you.

I think both of you are stark raving nuts.
