Installing a "new" os and the troubles
I have NetBSD on my vaio. I just need to enable estd and acpi control for the temperature.

Anyway, have you ever had to do a lot of configuring to make an application or OS work for you?

This isn't meant to be a dig or anything but the answer is usually only when I do Linux stuff ... I suspect that has a lot to do with using quite esoteric kit (like a Saitek gaming mouse).

Typically, on Windows, things just seem to work though that may have as much to do with me being "undemanding" in what I do on it as anything else but more recently on Windows 7 (currently release candidate 1) I had several issues ... firstly I couldn't install Office 2003 or 2007 (that was actually on late Beta) which was resolved by running setup programs directly rather than autorun and configuring ViClient (the ESX client which I eventually had to run through a virtualisation session.

Most of my real configuration stiuff is way, way back at DOS/Win 3.x level where you used to have to configure all kinds of shit to get past the 640K limit (and after Bill said it should be enough for anyone too, LOL).

QEMM for the win. Smile

As for the OP: I had to manually put a link to the Java engine once in Firefox under Ubuntu, that's about it. I had imagined I had to do some stuff to make my Aiptek drawing tablet work, but it activated without a hassle, even in widescreen.

I find it the other way around. When I have to reinstall Windows, nothing works and I have to search the internet for the correct drivers. With most Linux distros, the generic drivers seem to work from the word go (especially the sound). Usually the only configuration I have to do (and indeed did do on the laptop I am using now) is to install the nvidia driver, but there is a built-in program for that.
