lol, i am not digging for a debate right here. all of this kind of stuff is probably in a majority of countries period, not just african countries. i would guess that it's also a very small percentage of the populations as well. anyway, i get what you're saying here and the points you made, do sounds familiar to me. i was wondering why you went ad hominem on me when i was complimenting your word choice.

I didn't put a separation between my answer to you and my answer to people who were speculating without educating themselves on the problem. From the context of what I said you should have been able to discern this. Either way the problems in Africa are widespread. I've been reading about it for months and have been involved in some activism to try to stop the bullshit. Houston has a (relatively speaking) large African population because they are linked in with the Oil business. A large portion of these are Nigerians but really any country in Africa that has oil seems to have some ties with Houston. The sane people down here have had to keep a lot of pressure on these assholes to keep the schnanagans down. The last thing that region of Africa needs is money to fund horrors (though Nigeria is a large country the witch hunting churches spread far and wide beyond the boundaries of countries. It's not localized. The only thing that seems to be keeping it in check are the Muslim assholes (Boko Haram and friends) in the north who have their own set of horrors.

There are voices of reason. Some of them have been physically threatened with their lives in the places where these churches have the power to do this. One of the universities in a particularly bad district for witch hunting had a symposium to discuss the problem. It was broken up by a gang of thugs (some of them were women) dressed in matching hats and T-shirts (god I hope that money earned in the U.S. didn't go to pay for this). From what I read they didn't use weapons and what fighting there was didn't escalate to anything very serious. The gang worked their way into the group, sang and chanted loudly, pushed people around, got in their face and yelled at them. It was reported that a few people were hit and some Audio/visual equipment was taken and destroyed. Fortunately a video of this incident survived and it was posted to Youtube.

I'm not so learned about the other countries in Africa but specifically the government in Nigeria has tried to stop the crap. What's hindering things is the churches have manipulated things to get their own people into government (similar to the way this happens in the U.S.). When the sane people in the government try to stop the abuses but they are hindered. From what I understand this tactic of churches putting people in government positions so that they can get away with shit happens in other African countries as well. It's a tactic that works.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
