Wish I had a picture of the plot. I like clover as a ground cover. Grows fast, spreads, doesn't get unreasonably tall and is ok to mow, chokes weeds, deep rooted for soil containment, and enriches the soil with nitrogen. Many types are perennial. Clover needs a good bit of water to get going, but will stay green during drought periods. Most people I know don't like it since in patches it is considered the same as weed, but I find yards dominated by clover to be quite attractive. Low maintenance.
Clover is not a good alternative if the ground is heavily used. Dogs can wreck the yard with little trouble allowing weeds to grow in and at a minimum give it a patchy appearance.
