i stopped playing video games after they got more than 1 joystick and 1 button (fire or jump). i remember precisely, it was defender - there were buttons all over that game, i said that's it, i'm goin fishin with my dad.

Funny. Regarding the joystick, did you use the full fist, couple of fingers at the top, or (like me) jam it in the web between your index finger and thumb?

Another speed runner beat the record with a time of 1:45:41. Three hours later, the guy in the OP beat it again with a time of 1:45:35.
