I totally agree with Kayenneh. It's almost exclusively a US problem. I think the problem is not that Obama is bad. He's excellent. The problem is the Republicans. They're blocking everything Obama proposes. What's really good for America is to lock up one half of America (the half that believes the world is 10000 years old) and all will be well.

Europe seems ok because we haven't got the fundy problem. I was horrified when I saw how the Baptists in America picketed at funerals of US soldiers and saying really hurtful things about the deceased. You won't find such insanity in Europe.

I don't think previous generations had it any better. They had some terrible problems this generation doesn't have to worry much about.

I also really dislike items like "only 10 percent of kids can find New York on a map" and shit like that, as if knowledge of what, in practical terms, is a single piece of trivia was an indicator of education. I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it: kids I get to observe very frequently seem willing to learn and have many more resources available to them than I did growing up in the 80s and 90s. Hell, back then, 'nerd' and 'geek' were not terms of endearment, much less demographics in the mainstream markets.

I think a large part of the problem with education is that it's 2012, yet our approach to teaching kids is still rooted firmly in the 1950s: stick 30 kids in a classroom with one teacher with outdated books and materials and basically stuff them with information they'll be tested on later. Education today is not about learning but about being guided to a career path. It's about gaining marketable talents. I bet there are brain surgeons and physicists who can't find Iraq on a map, if you cared to poll a bunch of them.

The thing with American culture (at least from an European point of view) is the stubbornness to live the American dream. Of course everyone wants to succeed and be at the top, but when you leave so many people suffering in your wake just for yourself to be rich, something is wrong. And what is it with Americans and not asking for help, that everyone should take care of herself/himself? Such tenaciousness can be admirable, but it's ok to go on welfare for a while to get back upon your feet and there's no shame in getting help from the government. Yes, there will always be the moochers, who exploit the system, but people need a good security net provided by the government, so that if you fall, you don't land so hard and have the possibility to get back up. I mean, we don't have for instance single moms who work two or three jobs just to make ends meet, that would be considered preposterous over here.

Imagine how low that percentage was before Iraq was invaded. Twice. It's actually an educational policy in the U.S. - improve world geography by invading other countries. There's nothing like a bit of knowledge gained due to the death of a loved one for a cause that can't be explained.

And... not trying to be an arse, but when you make a post about the educational problems in the U.S., it would be good if you spelt "a lot" and "you're" correctly... especially when the latter is in your signature.
