Two Swedish women could be able to give birth using the wombs in which they were carried, doctors say, hailing the world's first mother-to-daughter uterus transplants.

The weekend procedures were completed by more than 10 surgeons at Sweden's University of Gothenburg.

The names of the patients have not been revealed.

Doctors caution they will not consider the operations successful unless the women achieve pregnancy.

"We are not going to call it a complete success until this results in children," said Michael Olausson, one of the Swedish surgeons told The Associated Press.

"That's the best proof."

Both women started in-vitro fertilisation before the surgery, he said, adding that their frozen embryos will be thawed and transferred if the women are considered in good enough health after a year-long observation period.

I'm not sure if they could do that with a biologically male body, though. I assume there is a lot more to it than, slap that in that space there. The complexity of that just boggles my mind. I hope they figure it out, nonetheless.

Actually, I did read an article on that this morning.

Or I started to read it before I got all angsty because by the time this becomes an actual treatment, I'd probably be far too old for it. That's when I had to go do something else.

Seriously, I think the most difficult thing to work out would be the slight difference in skeletal structure between male and female hips and the added difficulty this would create in carrying a baby.

The difference in pelvis shape would require a c-section. Evolution has pretty much maxed out the pelvis shape that allows upright walking to baby head size. But still the implications are awesome!

Well, I read that much, but I was more worried what it would do to my balance if I were to carry a child with broad shoulders, narrow hips and, as a consequence, a high center of gravity. Walking upright might be difficult from about 5 or 6 months on; moreso than with most pregnancies.

True, but there's a lot of women who have difficulty in that last trimester and have to go on strict bedrest.
