Nikon's Best Microscope Photos of 2012

Quote:For nearly four decades Nikon has been organizing its Small World microscope photography contest and this years’ entries are surely one of the best ever. 20 winning photographs were selected from nearly 2000 submissions for their originality, informational content and visual impact. The first place went to Jennifer Peters and Michael Taylor for showing the blood-brain barrier in a living zebrafish embryo, which Nikon believes is the first image ever to show the formation of this barrier in a live animal.

If you click through, you can see the titles to all of these.

Number 18 would make one hell of a wall paper. But number twenty is the only one that really cute and cuddly.

I was going to post a couple different things today that I had found, but this came into my e-mail box and I just love it. These are some of the most beautiful - if not the most beautiful - pictures of animals I have ever seen. They're well executed, the detail is amazing, and the capture of expression is phenomenal. Worth clicking through to see the rest.

My first fascination was with animals. Love seeing the faces, especially on that ray. I'd recognize a fellow critter any where.

On a local note my wife will be featured on PBS' Craft in America in a couple weeks and got a nice write up in the SF Chronicle this morning.

Otherwise known as a normal day around my house.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I really love the pics of the apes with their babies :-) So human, both the parent and the infant.
The featherless chicken/rooster is another favorite of mine too!

Hey what happened to your photo? (Not loading for me.)

Also, I thought you were a hyaena .. which would have explained a lot. (Are you really a naked, bearded guy?)
