UK Government kowtows to religious lobby
... but is anyone really surprised?

CofE gay marriage 'to be illegal'

As a 'Brit', I want to apologise to the secular world for the short sightedness of my Government. Be it know that I never voted for them.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

No one voted for this coalition so they seem to do what they damn well please.

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

Yes, that's true enough. It's just that there's a tendency to tar people with the brush of their Government, as though it's their fault what their politicians get up to.

Well, from my point of view, Portugal has legal gay marriage... Yet, we are fucked in everything else. I'm starting to understand Greece alot more now.

I see the line between state and religion crossed here.
Churches should be inderpendent from the goverment and decide for themselves whom they give the right to marry to within their comunity.

Other than that, I had hoped that the trend amongs "modern" conservatives to move away from backwards social issues had also reached the UK.

Well they are in power; suffice to say, someone voted for them. I did for one. I should remind you that the government is made up of all elected MPs, not just the controlling party (or parties). Indeed, in the article it's stated that the opposition party (Labour) have pledged votes to this cause.

In any case, this is a step backwards for the Church of England (after their other step backward when denying female bishops a few weeks ago). However, they are the only church being banned from performing same-sex marriages; the Quakers and Unitarians, as well as some Jewish groups are still waiting a decision by the government.

Happens to us all the time.
