The watershed is designed to protect children from stumbling on tv shows that could disturb them, such as pornography, swearing, etc.

On pay-per-view systems this feature is overruled of course. I wouldn't call it censorship, because these people are still getting to say what they want. In an ideal world, there would be no restrictions like the watershed, but instead people could choose whether to allow their children to watch certain channels.

Indeed, and with the UK going into the digital TV world in a few years, I suspect the watershed will be a thing of the past.

Steady on there mate, that was part of my bro's pick-up line* when he was about 18.

My brother was a man of great sophistication and sensitivity. He was very successful with the refined debutantes within his circle.

I have no problems with the use of the vernacular for the human generative act,as a verb, noun or adverb. However,I feel I haven't really insulted a person unless I've called them a cunt.

*the full line was "excuse me,would you like a fuck?"

RE: C---------
censorship is there because people are afraid to risk offending people they have never met and probably never will meet, and because we all seem to be afraid of becoming offended. it is silly because we all become offended and offend others anyway, and usually it isnt a big deal.

Isn't censorship more about protection. Insults aren't legislated against.

being insulted and being offended are two different but similar things

Censorship has it's positives. Its the application for which that is questionable at times.

I was thinking of protection of minors and vulnerable ppl. Offense suggests nothing genrally quantifiable.

yes, but it is the parents of the children, not the actual children who become offended at this censored material. and the thinking that theese people are vulnerable and need to be protected is just the fear of offending the people who may become offended.
