I would think that a god, if it exists, would know the genuine atheists from the theists and those who just "buy a lottery ticket" and do not genuinely believe in (their particular brand of) god, so I doubt atheists would be sincere, but instead merely expressing fear.

Wrong. The reason some atheists "invoke" god in life-threatening situations and such has nothing to do with sincere beliefs and everything to do with control. As humans, we try to find our way out of situations which may cause us harm. When there is nothing real left to do to try to save ourselves, we may revert to any supersticious crap we've ever heard of in an attempt to take control and help the situation. Gods are the most common, because they're the most common superstition.

A person who has never heard of gods, but grew up hearing that in an emergency you can pinch your big toe a certain way and you will be magically teleported to a place of safety will spend their last moments frantically pinching their big toe trying to teleport.

Religious kids have been doing that for at least a decade.

Because we secretly believe in God, silly... we just don't like to admit it, even to ourselves.

On the other hand, I expect you use words like Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday even though presumably you don't believe in Tiw, Wodan and Thor. In which case, why do you use them?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
