Religion and the Arts

Religion and the Arts
Had an interesting thing occur recently, I was studying and art course and life drawing was a required module. One guy in the class was muslim and hence forbidden to look upon the female form. So we got a guy instead.

But I'm just thinking about how the vatican defaced (or de-downedthered) so many sculputures. What art has been lost or restricted by religion?

I'm new to the arty thing btw.

Ah Min, friend of might was in the vatican city recently and all the genitalia hacked off these beautiful statues, I think she almost cried. She's a sculptor too, felt so sorry for her.

At least the vatican stopped eventually.

Quote:In Afghanistan recently, supreme Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar issued an edict against un-Islamic graven images, which means all idolatrous images of humans and animals. As a result, the Taliban are destroying all ancient sculptures. Explosives, tanks, and anti-aircraft weapons blew apart two colossal images of the Buddha in Bamiyan Province, 230 kilometers (150 miles) from the capital of Kabul.

I can hardly wait to see what the muslim brotherhood does in Egypt.

Yeah, I was close by when they did that to buddha. The Islamic religion rules here in Afghanistan, and they have no room for any other beliefs.

I suppose the only consolation will be when all the mosques and mecca get the same "tolerant treatment" can't wait for the day! Big Grin

My mom likes to edit my poetry. She takes out any curse words, any hate words she makes softer, takes out sexual insinuations, "fixes" what sounds grotesque and "replaces" it with sophistication, etc. I WANT my art to be grotesque. I WANT it to be revengeful, dirty, angry, bold, and yes.... creepy. That makes it my art. So she has my/her poem and I keep MY poem, and she just goes on through life thinking she fixed me.

She never will. Undecided

Anyway, it sucks that art coming from tiny and anonymous me should go contaminated, but to have historical art from huge artists be altered is just atrocious. It almost makes me gag. Or maybe that's just the excess of alcohol in my system.

Hey, if an Irish bog savage like me can engage in art, you go for it. Mainly Photography me, but I draw too, and tried to paint a few times.
