Does it make any sense to ask what is the case for atheism?
May 29, 2013 at 8:35 pm
A while back Drew created a thread asking what case may be made for atheism. My only reaction is to ask "why do we need to make a case for not believing in something?"
If Drew wishes to make the case for stamp collection am I obliged to defend not sharing that hobby? How exactly am I to go about that? Isn't it presuming a lot to think I would give his hobby a thorough investigation before I consider another hobby?
Much as it may gripe some theist's ass to admit, no justification is needed to dismiss theist claims. We require no note to get out of Sunday school.

Drew was under the mistaken impression that all atheism is 7 on the Dawkins scale.

This would never happen if theists asked atheists what atheism is, rather then take their pastors word for it. They come here thinking atheism is an opposing belief.

In a word, no.
I make no existential claims that aren't demonstrable, positive or negative.
Furthermore, I can't be bothered to give even a picofuck if any deities exist or not.

The fact that none of them can make a compelling case for any of their invisible sky-daddies is sufficient for me.

If there is a "case for atheism," it's in taking the case for religion, God, Christianity, Islam, whatever and showing how problematic it is.

The answer is an obvious no.
Atheism is not a claim, it is a response to a claim. There is no need to make a case for the disbelief of a claim unsupported by demonstrable evidence and reasoned argument.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
