The Separation of Church and State

I start this of by saying the following:

Gay Marriage should be 100% legal

This is true no matter who you are. Even if you HATE gays because god has condemned them and feels they are abominations. Well thats all well and good but here is the problem, "god" doesn't have any say in our goverment what so ever.

It's called the Separation of Church and State and it's in our United States Constitution. That is that. No further argument needs to be made. Not one for gay marriage, and not one against it.

Though I think we have all seen that the Separation of Church and State is total BS and it is unfortuantely not as strictly enforced as it should be.

Jumping in late, but you'll find no argument here. In fact I'm from the first and only 1 of 2 states that legalized it. (Yay MA) and the only other state that currently has the same standards is immediately out neighbor (Yay CT)

Gay Marriage is one of the issues I feel most passionately about as a bisexual and as a believe in equal rights, especially when the arguments against are purely religious (Unless you disike marriage in general)

I completely agree it should be 100 percent legal. But as some of you said, seperation of church and state in the USA is a MYTH. It does not exist. It makes me laugh because christians accuse atheists of taking God out of their country and making them lose their ability to practice chrisitianity- but this is the same thing they have been doing to atheists (and other faiths) for years... christianity is forced on us is a country thats supposed to have 'freedom'.

Unrelated, but I am so happy I found this forum!!! Finally a place to talk freely about my lack of beliefs. I've been learning so much in the past few hours I've been reading all your posts!

Rockthatpiano welcome aboard its good to have you here. Now to the topic at hand when it comes to gay rights or anyones rights for that matter I have no problems. As long as those rights dont harm anyone in the process.Regarding the constitution it's just a piece of paper in the U.S.Our system is littered with religious symbols and religious influence.Because in the U.S. christianity in all its shapes and forms is the majority our state does give them certain benefits. They are considered non profit organizations and claim a tax exempt status.I actually did some research on this matter and found that the church is not obligated to disclose its finances to the government. This is done on a strictly voluntary basis.Anyone knows that the church is the most profitable enterprise in the world. Our President and other elected officials swear to defend this constitution on the bible and in the name of God.In God we trust litters our court rooms, currency and a slew of other things.

Separation of church and state is a myth and will continue to be one since contrary to what the constitution states the actual actions of our government are in continual violation of the first ammendment.
There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition

I loved George Carlin. There was always so much truth to his delivery.

We have no separation of church and state. When Rick Warren has to lead a forum for future presidents, we have to face the truth about that myth.

School is an alarming show of how much damage a church-based society is. For the future's sake: we must have a separation of the church and state. In fact... for future's sake: we must have an oblivion of the church.

I don't per se but I'd like to see them go back to your Messiahs own words (IIRC) as he considerer the Church his people and not the buildings ... sell off the churches (the buildings and stuff) and you could feed an awful lot of people.

Quite simply: yes. It is a weed that the gardener likes the look of, but which causes horrible damage to the garden.
