RE: The Quran
What's funny is your translation of fatihah...

RE: The Quran
While I will concede that my use of translation was liberal. Mother of the Qur'an is another name for the opening.

RE: The Quran
Your translation was incorrect, not liberal. Yes, Mother of the Qur'an is also used as a name for the same chapter. You also made a whole host of unsubstantiated claims with no recourse to citations. There's a difference between an opinionated commentary and a contextual/linguistic commentary.

RE: The Quran
I was wrong about when to recite it.http://www.alislam.org/books/pathwaytoparadise/LAJ-chp5.htm This site does say to recite Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem before starting a task. The opening does start with that. I made a mistake. I'll change my notes. Thank you for pointing that out.
How ever you can bite me on the rest.

RE: The Quran
It's alright no problem. I think I was taking it too seriously anyway, I have the classical commentaries of the Qur'an at home and also a comprehensive Arabic-English dictionary, in hindsight I don't think this is the place to debate about the verses, you can write whatever you want, think of this place as your blog. As for me, then I'm going to ignore what goes on here, because then I will feel compelled to step in every time I see an incorrect translation or an unsubstantiated claim about a verse.

I was not expecting that reaction. I don't mind if you want to comment about something. How about if you see something you disagree with you get say something about it and I'll double check. No name calling or frustration required?

That`s great, since my time is severely limited.

If you dont mind, I will simply pick up were you left when I continue doing this, which doesnt mean that I am stopping you from not posting your own commentary.

Maybe we could share the reading and commenting part?

Thanks! I think that sounds like a great idea.

Chapter 2: The Cow
Written 622-624 Median expect last 3 verses those are Meccan. The timing is important because it helps explain what was going on in Mohammad's life at the time. He just arrived in Median. He fled Mecca do to what I understand to be religious hostility. In Median, he set up the first Islamic state. Since most of his followers were traders and not farmers (Median was a agricultural society.) For debatable reasons he started sending out raiding parties on the caravans. He knew the routes well since he had lived for 15+ years as a merchant. The raids not only helped to grow the wealth of the early Muslims but also gained him fame and followers.
Back to the Cow, it is the longest sura in the Qur'an, Making up 1/10th of the entire book.
One of the major themes of this chapter is guidance.
The first half is addressed to Muslims and the second half to Muslims.
http://quran.com/2
Verse 1-20
These verses divide people into believers(verse 3,4&5) unbelievers(verse 6&7) and hypocrites(verse 8-20).
Verse 16-20 are 2 parables describing what happens to different hypocrites.
EDIT: I might add more. I need a Coffee break.
