Can I still use them if I qualify them with "This is recycled garbage, but I'd like to discuss?" That way, I still get to use garbage arguments, you can forgo the now superfluous "GTFO," and you also get to enjoy giving your garbage refutations. Win/win

Hey, cheer up RR, they didn't mention the Argument from Consciousness, nor the Argument from Reason. There is still new garbate to pull out hereBig Grin.

Shut up, man! Angry They'll add those to the list too! Sad

OK, fine, let's assume for a moment that Hitler really was no True Christian. Let's assume he was just putting on an act for the populace. Hey, it wouldn't be the first time autocratic rulers found it useful to put on a pious facade for the public. What is that old saying...?

"Religion is regarded by fools as true, by the wise as false and by the rulers as ...useful." I forget who said it but there it is.

That all accepted, it remains that the people Hitler persecuted (the Jews, the pagan Gypsies, the godless Communists and the gays) were all persecuted for 2000 years by Christianity. Hitler didn't just invent the persecution of the Jews out of whole cloth. He built on the foundation of anti-semitisim that festered all over Europe since Christianity became the dominant faith. Even if Hitler wasn't himself a True Christian, his holocaust was the culmination of what Christianity created and made possible.

I don't really understand the point of this thread. Forum posts and threads by their very nature are very repetitive, you kind of had to think of that before joining them? And plus, it's perfectly possible for someone to argue from largely the same framework but from a different angle. I don't see this as anything other than an attempt to ward off Christians from the forum and I hope they don't buy into that.

Usually, they don't. Most of them don't even try to. As most of these arguments have been around for hundreds of years, you'd think people would assume that MAYBE we'd encountered them before, and rarely do we come across anyone who's got a different or interesting perspective.

The only reason the repetitiveness of arguments in SKEPTIC circles is somewhat refreshing is that science gives us new ways to approach things, and thus new pseudoscience for them to cling to. Religion doesn't afford anything new.

None of them? I can understand you wanting to cling to some of these arguments, but do you seriously think the likes of Pacal's Wager and "why would the disciples die for a lie" bullshit haven't been refuted?

I'd like to make this a project. I'm asking for a subforum where each thread could be made strictly about each argument. That way, when a new Christian comes by, we could just link to the thread and they could feel free to try to breathe life into the failed-but-still-endlessly-recycled argument.
