Just two points of concern:
1. The nose in the camel's tent. The anti-choice movement knows they can't get an outright ban so they're working on establishing precedent.
2. Medical emergencies need to be an exception always. Politicians can't play doctor.

The concern of the bill was NOT the provision for 20 weeks. The real issue was the increased requirements for abortion clinics, which are unreachable for 37 of the 42 available clinics in ALL of Texas. Texas is fucking huge. The idea behind the bill is basically to close most all of the abortion clinics, ergo nearly removing access to abortions all together for those who cannot travel.

The decreased availability, coupled with inability to travel = Exactly what they want

Just what you'd expect from the party so concerned with fiscal responsibility (special sessions are expensive to run), small government, fewer regulations and, most of all, "jobs, jobs, jobs".

Actually, I'm not really clear about why this is so controversial. Granted I'm probably missing something so hopefully someone can help clear this up for me.

This whole thing stems back to when a lot of southern states tried to prevent minorities from voting, correct? So the federal government ruled that certain states, and only certain states, that had a history of doing this couldn't enact any laws seen to try and do such a thing.

So while other states such as Wisconsin and Illinois states that you must show state issued identification in order to vote (which they do), other states like Texas and Mississippi can not. Right? Am I understanding this correctly?

Why don't you just go over to the DMV and grab an Indentification card? I don't see how it's ok for some states, in 2013, to say you have to have ID but it's not ok for other states to do the exact same thing.

And how is it unconstitutional? It's consititutional for the state of Illinois to have this requirement but it's unconstitutional for the state of Texas to have this requirement?

It's because 40 years ago, certain states were quite bad when it came to respecting the Civil Rights Act..that racism has spread westward and the Supreme Court ruled Section 4 unconstitutional to punish the same states for data that is 40 years old.

I see it as some Texan saying to invade Germany because they have the Nazi Party in power, which is obviously not the case.

Edit: but the GOP does have a point...I've been able to vote in California without being on the list for polling and did not even need an ID...they just let me vote...not sure if they threw it out in Sacramento though.
