I didn't say it was right, I am just saying that most cops are not evil as many here seem to make out, its just stupid, and of course some people will unfortunately get killed, it cannot be totally avoided, its the same in war, civilians are often killed also.

"Most cases" isn't what the post was about. It was about a particular cop who acted particularly inappropriately, in a way that ought to land him in jail, not back on the beat.

Hold them accountable for their actions. Fire them when they fuck up. Try them just like any other citizen when they apparently commit a crime. Why is that so much to ask?

That's already being done, you don't want to believe that because your mind is already made up and you probably hate cops, the very people you would run to when your life is threatened.

To coin a phrase, don't psychoanalyze me.

I don't have to love the police to reasonably expect them to help me. That's their job, for which they are paid thanks to my taxes. If they don't want to do that job (or abide by the laws they are tasked to enforce), they should be looking for some other.

I don't have any kind of problem at all with good cops, except that when they have to choose sides between another cop and that cop's victim, they have a disturbing tendency to look after their own, rather than the ones they should be looking after.

I am almost certain I am wasting my time with this, but here goes.

The 'not all cops are bad' routine is misplaced since it does nothing to help solve the problem, which is that the 'bad' cops are not held accountable for their transgressions. In my mind this makes the 'good' cops complicit, particularly since they help support the various brotherhoods and fraternities that wield political power to ensure cops remain above the laws that would be used to place the rest of us behind bars. To me this is quite similar to 'good priests' knowing and doing nothing when the Catholic church was playing the shell game with pedophile priests. Doing nothing when you have the ability to influence outcomes makes one complicit. The 'do nothing' good cops are a big part of the problem.

Until bad cops are held accountable for their actions, the entire enterprise can go fuck itself. Your entire defense is pointing at people and giving them hero status for simply doing their jobs. Despite what you see in entertainment, the daily life of a cop is fairly mundane. This of course does not take away from the few who truly rise to the occasion and go above and beyond for the sake of public safety. Let's agree to reserve hero status for those that are actually heroic and not a label for simply donning a uniform. This would go a long way towards removing the veneer of unearned respectability that automatically comes with the badge. Let them earn our respect. Cops are public servants and should be kissing citizens' asses, not the other way around.

Police today are nothing more than overgrown third grade hall monitors. If police want our respect, let them earn it. The 'good cops' should make a stand and rid their ranks of the bad actors. The fact they don't should tell you something.

S.F. Sheriff’s Deputy facing felony charges for assaulting hospital patient, filing false report

33-year old deputy Michael R. Lewelling, was arrested and charged with four felonies — perjury, filing a false police report, filing a false instrument and assault under the color of authority — for an attack on a dozing patient at S.F. General Hospital on November 3rd of this year.

According to a police report filed by Lewelling, the victim assaulted him with a cane. Lewelling arrested the victim who was charged with a felony and a misdemeanor.

District Attorney George Gascón explained that investigators were able to view surveillance tape that contradicted Lewelling’s account of the events.
