Ireland to allow abortions
July 11, 2013 at 7:43 pm
Just flashing up as breaking news, the Republic of Ireland are finally to allow abortions. Only under certain (more obvious) conditions, but it is at least a step in the right direction.
Welcome to the 20th century, Ireland. A few steps closer to the 21st century.

Quote:The bill includes provisions for abortion if a woman's life is threatened by pregnancy, including by suicide, if a panel of psychiatrists judges the threat to be real. It also prescribes a jail term of 14 years for anyone procuring or performing an abortion obtained under false claims.
They're far, far, far from the 21st century.

Very true. That popped my bubble more than a little. 1 small step at a time, though, I guess.

@ red celt: yea, but it's hard to be happy about it when you think about all those women who are poor and cannot afford to leave the country for an abortion . Well, I guess at least now no one has to die for it ...

Exactly. And it pisses me off, so much. Those supposedly "pro-life" (what a misnomer) people who are subjecting young, vulnerable women to the trauma of an unwanted pregnancy. Especially when it's a girl with religious parents who won't offer her the support or guidance (let alone the money) to seek an alternative in the UK.
So. If a woman is raped, a panel of judges (secular or with Catholics?) won't help her unless she can prove that she is suicidal?
