I'm unwilling to blame either religion or the bipolar disorder without doing further research into bipolar disorder.
I definitely agree that the medical staff dropped the ball.

I should be VERY clear that I am not saying women with bipolar cannot be good mothers. I'm just saying hormones plus mental illness can put people at risk and they should be aware of it, as should their healthcare providers.
I'm not saying that all religious people are insane, but insanity and religion often go hand in hand. Just like Andrea Yates who drowned her children so they wouldn't be tempted by the devil and would go to heaven. It's often a fine line between religion and insanity, though.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
I've said it before, but I find it utterly repugnant that people with voices in their heads are considered crazy, but when these voices are attributed to deities like god or Jesus, then that person is merely religious. If there's a fine line between these people, I'm not seeing it.

Religion is a delusion. But those who claim to hear god's voice. Yes, sounds like insanity to me. Actually even those who claim voices come from god are considered insane if the voices tell them to do things that are not acceptable within society. But when a pastor says that, everything's fine!
@Dena, my comment wasn't directed at you, sorry if you thought so. The fine line in regard to diagnostic criteria is that "religious experience" aren't considered delusional or psychotic - unless patently bizarre according to societal norms. The "societal norms" is their trump card. |
