I finally made some headway in a proof that I have been working on.  Specifically, the actual exercise in my math book went as follows. 
Let a,b, and c be real numbers.  Prove that 3/2(a^2+b^2+c^2+1)≥ a(b+1)+b(c+1)+c(a+1).

Now, after multiplying both sides of the inequality by two, distributing the three on the left side and the two on the right side (along with distributing the individual terms [for example, in the term  a(b+1), distributing the a though (b+1)] on the right side), and then literally breaking down the left side into its smaller components (for example, 3a^2 =a^2+a^2+a^2 and 3=1+1+1 and so on), the resulting algebra will eventually lead one to have all terms on the left side of the inequality and combine terms in such a way that they can be factored into a sum of six squares, which by definition (and via the hypothesis), must be non-negative. Consequently, we can begin the proof by using the hypothesis that a,b, and c are real numbers.  As a result, we can then deduce the new forward statement that the squares we obtained from going backwards from the conclusion are also real numbers whose sum must be non-negative.  Hence, expanding the six factored squares, and then doing the algebra, enables us to retrace our reasoning from the backward process in a forward direction, which leads to a proof.
