What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
It's funny, that just as I was reading about your lettuce ending up on the floor, my guinea pigs started crying out in unison for food.
Little psychic bastards. :-)

I have a boneless leg of lamb roasting on the spit out in the back yard. Hungry
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Oh, ok.  When I posted that, we were having rain showers on a bright, sunny day.  When I was a kid, we used the phrase 'The Devil must be beating his wife' to refer to that particular meteorological even.

That poor lamb must have had a helluva limp.

That sentence turned me into a pavlovian dog for a minute there.
I have a large rosemary bush out the back that does the same thing to me when I brush past it.

RE: What's everyone up to right now?
I recently figured out how misleading wattage is for guitar amps, how a 10 watt amp is actually only about half the volume of a 100-watt amp, and how a crucial part of how loud an amp can be is actually not in the wattage, but in the speaker sensitivity. The actual equation is: Maximum Volume=Speaker Sensitivity+10logWATTAGE+10logNUMBEROFSPEAKERS.

So, I've decided to create what I call the X-scale (X for 10 and Champ, which would actually be Chi) to put it all into a proper perspective. My baseline for the X-scale is the Fender Champ, which has a maximum rating of very close to 100 dB (94.1 sensitivity, 4 watts). X-score is calculated by how much their maximum volume exceeds 100 dB (Equation derived from psychoacoustics: X-score=2^(change in dB/10)). This should be easy enough to calculate if A) you know the speaker sensitivity, and B) you have a calculator capable of using logarithms (indeed, Google itself should suffice). Unfortunately, A is a major reason this list is nowhere near comprehensive; if I don't have an amp listed here so far, I don't know how sensitive the speakers are.

Fender:
  • 1: Champ, Tweed Princeton
  • 1.27: Bassbreaker 007
  • 1.34: Harvard
  • 1.43: Deluxe
  • 1.45: Princeton Reverb
  • 1.52: Pro Junior
  • 1.60: Super-Champ X2
  • 1.97: Bassbreaker 15, Blues Junior
  • 2.13:  Pro
  • 2.30: Tweed Super
  • 2.42: Bassbreaker 30RT
  • 2.46: Vibrolux
  • 2.58: Bandmaster
  • 2.64: Hot Rod Deluxe
  • 2.83: Bassman
  • 2.95: Super Reverb
  • 2.99: Bassbreaker 1830
  • 3.36: Low Power Twin, Bassbreaker 45
  • 3.68: Hot Rod Deville
  • 3.86: High Power Twin Tweed
  • 3.92: Twin Reverb
  • 4.28: Showman 112
  • 4.69: Showman 115
Vox:
  • 1.32: AC4-112
  • 1.62: AC10
  • 1.97: AC15 Greenback
  • 2.26: AC15 Alnico Blue
  • 2.30: Super Beetle Mini
  • 2.42: AC30S1
  • 2.79: AC30 Greenback
  • 3.43: AC30 Alnico Blue
Marshall Combos:
  • 0.71: DSL1C
  • 1.14:  Origin5, DSL5C
  • 1.68: 18-watt
  • 1.86: Studio 20, Origin20C
  • 2.14: 2525C, DSL20C
  • 2.64: DSL40
  • 2.99: Bluesbreaker
Other:
  • 0.65: Pignose
  • 0.97: The Vaux amp Dad and I are working on.
  • 2.62: Leslie 147
  • 2.64: ZT Lunchbox Acoustic
  • 3.25: Standel 25L15, ZT Lunchbox Junior
  • 3.65: Mesa Boogie Mk 5
  • 4: ZT Lunchbox

Note that this is nowhere near comprehensive (especially since it's clearly weighted more towards Fenders, what with Jensen speakers still putting out many of the same models they did in the fifties with sensitivity ratings, and I specifically only put combos in this list), but if you can find the speaker sensitivity of the amp in question (the wattage will almost always be easy enough to find and anyone with eyes to see can figure out how many speakers a given amp has) and figure out basic exponents, it should be easy to get the score. Sure as shit easier than taking an amp and decibel meter (placed exactly 1 meter away from the speakers), finding a place to play where people won't demand you turn it down, and hoping you can still hear what it sounds like when it's all over.

Just got home from taking our oldest dog to the vet for exam and shots. Her heart murmur hasn't worsened and requires no treatment, which is good news. As I have suspected for a while she is pretty much deaf. My husband has been convinced she is just stubborn. I wear hearing aids so I get it. She's in pretty good shape for her breed and age. Now I have the rest of the day to not be at work. Smile
