Update on Lexy. She had a CT scan of the shoulder ($1000 up front) and it's confirmed that she need arthroscopy/repair. That will happen this Wednesday. Until then she has to wear a hobble vest. It basically restricts her front legs range of movement, primarily laterally.
The wife is acclimating her to the 'cone of shame' which is expected after surgery.

Pondering computer matters. There's new graphics card and CPU architectures due in the second half of 2022, involving all three major players, Intel, AMD, and nVidia. Until then, it seems there's nought to do but sit on my hands. In the meantime, I'm deciding whether to keep the new power supply that I bought. It's 20% more power than I'll likely need in the next 5 or so years, and a good but not great power supply would be $100 cheaper, but good is not great, and having more than I need at the same cost is only a bad thing if there are downsides to having too much. I don't think there are. It should be as quiet as an 850-watt supply, as well built as the best on the market, and provides that 20% margin in case computers become crazy power hungry in the next 10 years. Failing any major changes to the ATX spec, this power supply could last me 10-20 years.

I'll still have to wait until the end of the year, but I could upgrade to 1440p gaming with a high refresh rate ultra-wide monitor and still save money over the top-of-the-line 12th gen platform that I was considering. My heatsink would carry-over. That's $75. The CPU is cheaper. That's $200. The motherboard is cheaper. That's $150. And my memory would carry-over. That's $400. I'd save over a third of the cost, making a $400-500 monitor easily doable. (Hell, I could afford a $300-400 VR setup as well. My graphics card isn't ideal for it, but never let the perfect be the enemy of the good.)

Well slap me silly and call me Susan! I performed some cable management to get all the cables clean and tidy, hooked up the two remaining 250mm case fans, and put the side panels on my case, and that fixed the problem with the SSD running too hot. It was running about 60 C at idle. It's now running at 45 C at idle, which is more than acceptable.

Making plans to do as little as possible today.
Sounds like a great plan.

Nothing sounds better than my plan.......
Actually.- that isn' t right.
"Nothing" (Boru' s plan) sounds better than my plan - which is replacing the exhaust and roll bar links on the car on the lift....
Punctuation matters..

Laziness, by Robert Service
Let laureates sing with rapturous swing
Of the wonder and glory of work;
Let pulpiteers preach and with passion impeach
The indolent wretches who shirk.
No doubt they are right: in the stress of the fight
It's the slackers who go to the wall;
So though it's my shame I perversely proclaim
It's fine to do nothing at all.
It's fine to recline on the flat of one's spine,
With never a thought in one's head:
It's lovely to lie staring up at the sky
When others are earning their bread.
It's great to feel one with the soil and the sun,
Drowned deep in the grasses so tall;
Oh it's noble to sweat, pounds and dollars to get,
But - it's grand to do nothing at all.
So sing to the praise of the fellows who laze
Instead of lambasting the soil;
The vagabonds gay who lounge by the way,
Conscientious objectors to toil.
But lest you should think, by this spatter of ink,
The Muses still hold me in thrall,
I'll round out my rhyme, and (until the next time)
Work like hell - doing nothing at all.
Boru

Watching baseball. I installed my new graphics card and the first thing I do is test the framerates in my favorite game, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. Despite being a faster graphics card, I find that I'm getting terrible framerates. Some googling later I learn that the AMD drivers have poor support for DirextX 11. Unfortunately several of the games I care about, namely Odyssey, AC: Origins, and AC: Black Flag are all DX11. Fortunately there's a workaround, but I didn't have to fuck with stuff with the nVidia card. I knew going in that AMD's drivers weren't as mature as nVidia's drivers, but this is ridiculous. Install an nVidia card and it just works. Not the same with AMD. I guess that's the nature of compromises. I don't feel like spending an extra $200 for the benefit of one or two games.

Reading that there's probably going to be a new power supply cable type for future graphics cards, including ones released this year in H2. EVGA will probably release an adapter, but better to wait. I'd like to keep that 1000-watt power supply that I bought, but better safe than sorry. Good thing I held off on opening it until everything else had been settled. That's life, I suppose. There's a lesson in there for me. Stop buying until they release all the new shit later this year.
