Weekly NFL Picks Thread
RE: Weekly NFL Picks Thread
Titans, Jets, Texans, Eagles, Lions, Bucs, Cardinals, Bears, Bengals, Miami, Seattle, Giants, Saints, Chiefs, Panthers.

Lot of tough calls this week.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Chefs might win when they play in Arrowhead in a few weeks. I don't see it happening this week. I'm also not really sold on the Chefs because they've mostly been beating up on cupcakes (a trend that franchise is probably more famous for than anything; it's been like 20 years since they last won a playoff game).

That said, luckie and Brian should form a support group for people who don't understand why other people don't pick their favorite teams. ;D

The Broncos haven't exactly had a tough season. They have yet to beat a team that current has a winning record:

Ravens (4-5), Giants (3-6), Raiders (3-6), Eagles (5-5), Cowboys (5-5), Jaguars (1-8), Colts (Loss, 6-3), Redskins (3-6), Chargers (4-5)

Then again, the Chiefs also have not beaten a team with a current winning record, either:

Jaguars (1-8), Cowboys (5-5), Eagles (5-5), Giants (3-6), Titans (4-5), Raiders (3-6), Texans (2-7), Browns (4-5), Bills (3-7)

Excluding the teams they both played:

Denver: Ravens (4-5), Colts (Loss, 6-3), Redskins (3-6), Chargers (4-5)
KC: Titans (4-5), Texans (2-7), Browns (4-5), Bills (3-7)

Throw out Denver's loss to the Colts, and KC's win against the creampuff Texans, and they look about the same, based on strength of schedule only. There are many other factors of course - but your contention that the Chiefs have been beating up cupcakes seems to be equally applicable to the Broncos - neither has really played anyone really good and won. This is the matchup of the season in the AFC, IMHO - and will tell us a lot about who's really on top of the conference.

Have to throw this in: Seattle has beaten two serious playoff contenders: The 49ers and the Panthers. We've otherwise had a pretty similar season to both KC and Denver.

In my experience following the NFLsince 1996 and living in Redskins land until last year, 3-6 is something you'd think Skins fans would have been long-accustomed to.

Not only that, it's an improvement when compared to some seasons.

Bob Costas came out saying he would not want his kids to play football.

But, even more important than one man's opinion is this:

Quote: Costas' statement comes alongside a new report that Pop Warner participation is down 9.5 percent between 2010 and 2012. According to data provided to Outside the Lines, a record 248,899 played Pop Warner football in 2010, but that number fell to 225,287 by the 2012 season. Additionally, participation in USA Football dropped 6.7 percent in that same span.

Dr. Julian Bailes, Pop Warner’s chief medical officer, said the decline can be attributed mostly to the increase in awareness about head injuries.

"Unless we deal with these truths, we're not going to get past the dropping popularity of the sport and people dropping out of the sport," Bailes told OTL. "We need to get it right."

It will be interesting to see what impact the NFL settlement has on kids' participation in football.
