So, no, you're not paranoid. Your concerns are genuine.

@festive1 - I wish I could say something more reassuring, but I have to agree with John V. I guess there is a first time for everything. Angel

I have seen the same study, and after experiencing some very real hit-and-miss medicine, I can say I see no reason to doubt it. As the joke goes, they don't call it "practicing medicine" for no reason.

What can you do, though? Really, all you can do is ask questions, take responsibility for educating yourself about any medications and diagnoses, and if something you encounter is questionable, question it. You have to be your own best advocate. Do not trust them blindly.

The human species is just stupid as a whole.

Perhaps. Occasionally I get a little crazy and have some actual hope for the human race, but then I see news headlines like "US Government To Shut Down 'cause Fuck Obama" or something like that, and said hope is revoked.

Now that I think about it, you're probably right. All the world is is basically the power grabbers vs the peons. Oh well, like Carlin said, I'm just along for the ride.
No creator in the heavens above (I am the lightning)
Rest your weary mind
No demons in the furnace below (I am the frenzy)
I have realized I AM GOD

Perhaps this is because if you're intelligent enough to become a doctor, you're actually really stupid with people/no common sense... and the people who are good with people/have common sense don't have the type of intelligence it takes to become a doctor... Very few people with the correct balance of both types of intelligence?

Hmmm... Well at least I'm not alone. Not that it makes me feel any better, though it kind of does... It just doesn't change all the morons out there.

I also had a kid (I say kid because I'm in my 30s and he's like 18-19) in my bio class who wanted me to help him and some other people in class talk with the dean of the department about our prof. Virtually everyone bombed the test, and they are all blaming the professor. I quite like the professor. He's smart and funny in an off/quirky way, (as most PhD science people I've met tend towards) and he gives good, detailed lectures that make most sense if one has actually prepared for class (i.e. has read the chapter being covered). I think he has some difficulty breaking down very simplistic ideas, but I haven't had a problem understanding his lectures and since this is a collegiate level class I see no issue. I've had shitty profs, this prof doesn't meet my criteria. It's just really awkward to tell this kid, the problem is you, not the prof. You just have no clue how college works. They don't just hand you a decent grade because you show up for lecture, you have to work and demonstrate you understand what is being taught.

It's kind of funny because I met with the prof during office hours to pick up some work, and he seemed to be prodding me to address this issue from the student side. Evidently, the bio department is being slammed by the nursing department because students attempting to get into the nursing program can't pass the necessary exams. But the bio department doesn't want to make the courses so difficult (the level required to pass the nursing exams) that almost everyone fails, but the department (not just my prof) is struggling to get the students up to snuff. I dodged engaging on that topic because it's just awkward, but after hearing about a group of classmates thinking of going to the dean about him... maybe I'll try to talk to him about it again.
I'm just astounded by the stupidity... And the blaming of the perfectly decent professor for the class' stupidity and non-college preparedness.
It makes making friends difficult. It is lonely.
