Why not covet your neighbor's wife? Or do you swing the other way?

Uh huh.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

But where does free will come in, then? You said earlier that apologizing as well as forgiveness are a choice, but not if we only do it because we are shaped to do it. But if we are wired to be "good members of the community" why do so many still act outside of the chemical and social shaping?
Excellent question. Evolution in process, is my answer.

Evolution, ok, but I'm still not understanding your stance on free will. Some of us have the ability to break social norms and chemical patterns, but evolution in process is weeding them out.
So, the natural end here would be a perfect society of people giving in to their chemicals and social constructs, getting along with everyone else.
Is this where you are going?
And for the definition of sin . . . "an offense against reason truth and right conscience." CCC paragraph 1849
and it goes on, but I thought I'd see what you made of that first.
(October 28, 2013 at 8:17 pm)Owlix Wrote: I mean for you to explain your rationale to say that free will is an antecedent to sin.
Free will, or the ability to choose or make your own decision in any circumstance, came before sin. You must have free will in order to choose anything, whether it be right or wrong. Without free will, there is no choice.
So, if you were a robot you would have no free will. Your actions would be controlled by your programming or whoever is holding your controller. If you unjustly kill someone, it wouldn't be you doing it. You could not be held accountable, it would not even be your action. it would just be your carrying out the actions of your programming or your controller.
There is no sin if there is no choice to sin.

I have made no assertions that I know the destiny of our race/species (that's the practice of theists).
And, a better question would be...
Is this where we're going?

Ok, I've defined sin. Can you please state whether free will exists?
EDIT: Also, I am pretty sure that scientists look at patterns in the world and make assertions based on those patterns. All realms of science do this.

This thread is about hypocrisy, and not sin, nor free will. If you want to define free will according to your understanding on a thread of your own, and you are willing to discuss the views of others on the topic, then I will be very pleased to contribute. As for this thread, I am finished with the splintering-off that has taken place, and I don't care to attempt to answer your question here. Thank you, and I look forward to your thread.

I also look forward to that thread, where maybe GR can drop the whole "I already know what you think" line and start fresh, since s/he HAS said s/he's willing to listen. The sarcasm has been fun, though.
Burp.

Of the seven deadly sins, would it not be sloth and/or gluttony? Either one will do it.
And to my knowledge them seven deadly sins are extra Biblical catholic doctrine which I imagine most protestants don't give a toss about. Unless them pics are of catholics, it's not exactly hypocrisy imo.
Lust is a much better sin.
