I think people are confusing the islamic religion with the society/culture of islamic states. It wasn't too long ago that such atrocities were committed regularly in christian nations. In many places, they still are. If you put an extremist into an environment in which they can act with impunity, then history tells us that the results are always pretty similar.

It's not the beliefs that are the problem, it's the society that allows such acts to go unpunished.

It's just my opinion, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe a majority of muslims really do commits acts like this. Maybe a majority of christians are out there setting fire to witches. What do I know? I'm just an atheist that's about to tuck into a lovely roast baby

My problem with this is if the beliefs, dogmatic in nature, are the motivation behind their actions. There is no problem solving or critical thinking involved, just pure execution of instruction.

I agree, but this a problem inherent with people, not religion. The 20th century alone was littered with non-religious examples of exactly the same sort of behaviour.

When it comes down to it, humanity has a capacity for violence, sadism and mindless destruction that far outstrips even the most extreme intepretation of any religious holy book.

People are ignorant, sadistic fuckers. Religion is just the most common excuse for being an ignorant, sadistic fuck.
