Hypocrisy
So I make jewelry and occasionally I use crosses and other religious symbols in my jewelry making you can see it in my Showing Off thread. Is it wrong for me to do it? Should I simply stick to more neutral designs?

It's your business. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

I wouldn't worry about it.

RE: Hypocrisy
I think it would be nice if we could move towards a culture where seeing a cross doesn't mean it belongs to christianity or is representative of christianity. In other words, a culture that doesn't take religion as seriously. Plenty of old mythologies like greek and norse are being remade into movies or incorporated into books and it's just entertainment. But imagine if we tried to do that with Islam how "politically incorrect" and "offensive" that would be. It's all part of this special treatment that the religious are so used to having which I think isn't conducive to frank conversations about religion and its impact.

In short I think it's fine to use the cross just for decoration or for aesthetic purposes, those who think it's not ... well, time to get used to it.

If it doesn't have to do with christianity, then isn't it just reduced to a horrible torture device? Not that it isn't already a horrible torture device.

From my perspective, I sometimes like to use religious symbolism, sometimes coming from a variety of traditions even though I don't actually accept the attached religious beliefs in any literal way. The images usually have a meaning to people outside of their original explicitly religious context (a cross can symbolize self-sacrifice, or a memorial to a loved one), and some of the art, poetry, and writing can be beautiful in a secular context.

It's your decision, ultimately. I also wouldn't see anything wrong with producing religious art for people who are religious, given that it can have a great deal of meaning to them.
