My family had a pitbull for about a decade. Gordon was his name. Oh, how we loved him. He was so loving to us and always protected the home by barking confidently, yet reasonably, when people passed by. He never harmed anybody and was well trained to follow certain rules. In fact, he helped us train other puppies. If the puppy tried to leave the house or go potty in the wrong area, Gordon would kindly pick the pup up with his mouth and place it where it should be. The pups loved him and slept under his belly. Never ever did he cause any problems.

A lovely anecdote, but general policy has to be set by the overall statistics. And the fact is that overall, pitbulls are notoriously dangerous animals.

OR something about vegetarianism. . .

Yes they are notoriously dangerous, but only because we humans have made them that way. Any other dog of similar size is potentially just as dangerous.

I am not a vegan or vegetarian. As a member of a predatory species I feel I have just as much right to eat other animals as do lions. That said, I think mankind also has an obligation to treat the animals it slaughters humanely.

Are you also not aware that more meat is necessary to sustain a larger brain? Veganism seems rather irrational & emotionally driven. It certainly isn't something that would appeal to me.

Also, animal rights (I say animal rights not animal welfare, animal welfare is something I support) is a totalitarian mass movement aiming at disrupting the natural order.

What I meant by my comment is that slaughter /= torture, as is the common leftist opinion by vegans.

Total bullshit.

If a pitbull is treated the same as any other dog it is more likely to attack children/people/other dogs. What the fuck makes you think that "treated well" makes a difference to that? Ie a pitbull "treated well" is as safe as any other dog also "treated well"? That's your claim??

And don't try coming back with "number of bites" because there are plenty of breeds that if they bite they do not inflict any lasting harm versus pitbull and their savage bite. This is true of a German Sheppard that was owned by a neighbour - it bit two people. But it wasn't savage the bite did barely anything, and both times the people deliberately provoked it - and I can attest to that as a witness. It certainly was not the aggressor. One of guy's it bit even provoked it after being warned not to. Then it bit a third person that I didn't witness, after that it was put down by the rangers. As far as I know about the third bite it was not savage either, it didn't tear any flesh.

RE: Any Vegetarians/Vegans here?
What I meant by 'treated well' was how the dog was raised. How it was socialised. Are the dogs needs being met? Dogs are pack animals and so have very specific needs that humans know nothing about. Human psychology and dog psychology are too completely different things and all problems with dogs occur because humans apply their psychology to dogs. I stick by what I say. Raised properly, a pitbull is no more dangerous than any other dog of similar size.

First you said genetics don't matter, then you come and claim that the domesticated dog is a "pack animal" - which is it? You can not have it both ways my friend.

I didn't say genetics don't matter, don't misrepresent me.
I talked about genes in the context of humans breeding attributes (aggressiveness) into dogs and how they are not as important as the environment in my view.
Dogs are pack animals, it is to do with genetics. However the pack (or lack of) is part of the environment.
