I do SoulCollage at times, and use magazine clippings or printouts of stuff I like on the web. I have a pinterest account for the latter.

I can relate, I want to get better but I get lazy when it comes to looking up tutorials then when I follow them, something always somehow doesn't work.

I do photorealistic pencil drawings. Fortunately I still have a supply of old Turquoise pencils that were made in the US. Since they started making them in Mexico they went to shit. When I run out of these I'll have to find a new brand to use.

I think most of it is trial and error, then you have to worry about the years of experience to get to the level you actually want.
