I watched a debate with Christopher Hitchens where he said that science and philosophy bring real and not imagined consolation to people who are dying or in the midst of thinking about death. He said that in particular the philosophy of Spinoza is helpful.
As far as I can tell, spinoza tells us to deny our instincts and try to gain mathematical certainty in life? Is that right? surely hitchens meant something more... modern than this???
