GOP senate candidates changing stance on birth control to get women voters
It looks like a hollow attempt to win some women voters in less than two months. Their new stance is that over-the-counter pills should be available. Of course, these typically aren't covered, so they can be a substantial cost to women. Apparently, some of them are having trouble acclimating to their new talking points: Mike Coffman Wrote:I am just pro-life, and I'm proud of that. And uh, I do not support personhood. But, uh, I support a women's access to, to, um, certainly to — this Hobby Lobby decision — to uh, to get... Someone in the audience actually had to say "birth control" to rescue him.
Although it comes as no surprise, Senate Republicans have just confirmed that they all believe that money equals speech & corporations should be allowed to spend as much as they desire, untraceably, on election campaigns. This is despite the fact that 80% of US citizens oppose the Citizen's United ruling that has allowed unlimited dark money to be funneled into mostly Republican campaigns.
Quote:The bipartisan nature of these views is striking in these largely partisan times. The court’s ruling is opposed, respectively, by 76, 81 and 85 percent of Republicans, independents and Democrats; and by 73, 85 and 86 percent of conservatives, moderates and liberals. Majorities in all these groups, ranging from 58 to 73 percent, not only oppose the ruling but feel strongly about it. This was a party line vote. Every single ® either voted against the amendment or abstained. Here's hoping they get punished at the voting booth this November.

One can hope, but it's not likely based on historic incumbent reelection rates consistently being over 80% (the House is almost always over 90%). This means that unless the incumbent isn't renominated in the primary process we can expect more of the same. This year 273 of the 275 incumbents up for reelection were renominated; therefore, we're fucked. This suggest that despite the pathetic approval ratings, most everyone thinks of his/her representative and senators as exceptions. This is similar to people exempting their kid's teachers from broader criticism of the quality of public education. |
